Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative side in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and taught her to utilize art as a method of expressing herself. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her family, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence of a particular Jury member. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
